Let's be Real with God, You!
When we deny that we glorify ourselves, we lose touch with the precise picture of what it means to glorify God! We separate it into an undefined blob in the backs of our minds, which we often don't even want to try defining when it comes up in conversation, while we go about our days glorifying humanity in ways that we define by different concepts. Are they reductionistic, because there's no room beyond mere description to adequately define those things? Are their deeper meanings impossible to evaluate? Maybe some are even when they wouldn't be if we were willing to tell the truth about them!
"This meeting is to recognize Anne Johnson and Ted Frell for their tremendous service to the city! Why, they've up 'n'give us all jealousy pains just lookin' at how much they've accomplished!". "Why are you glorifying them?", you ask. "What?! I'm confused. You mean like God!? Son, we ain't glori-whatnot-en 'em. We're just clappin' a little to show our love..". Blech!
"Let's glorify God, today, people. He's .." No, I can't come up with a sarcastic version of that, but the point is that it would have been disconnected from everyday events. Now, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it have been different for God, because we say it's too important for us to judge like that, so we have to keep it general and metaphorical and nonsensical!? Right. Think of the people earlier. Glorify God not only for but also when He pushed me with an urge to do what I wasn't going to do, but then it worked out real well for me. Glorify God for keeping the city going!
When we reconnect definitions that have been abstracted away, we can not only glorify God, but we can praise Him ("That little Suzy was so smart to do that thang!"), and we can revere Him ("The President is doing a great job! He's a way better leader than you-know-who!"), and we can love Him ("Pick up your room, little Johnny. It's tough now, but it's for your own good.", and "Let me walk with you, grandmother, and carry your burden", because love is action, not just words and feelings, though they can, indeed, express it).
Let's be real with God, you!
